Obama's brilliant bad speech - Los Angeles Times
I had never read material by Gregory Rodriguez before this morning's piece in the Los Angles Times. I agree with most of what he has to say but think his last two paragraphs which contain a summary of his take on Obama's speech also misses the mark that he accuses Obama of missing.
No one person can do justice to the topic. Identity politics involves many complex contributing factors. While we may not need a large physical movement to grant people their civic rights, we do need to acknowledge that too many people in this large country have no clue what it means to be a "mongrel" USAmerican (as in the title of Rodriguez' book) or what many of us refer to as mestizaje.
I agree that transcending race is nearly impossible, my thesis would be a call to learn about as many groups within our society so as to have more productive conversations that lead to better public policy on social issues.
